Slovenian-Montenegrin Theatre Cooperation: The Post-Yugoslav experience

The paper gives an overview of the cooperation and presence of Slovenian artists and theorists in the Montenegrin theatre production that has involved key creators from the Slovenian theatre. At the same time, it maps models of partnerships and co-productions prompted by both Slovenia and Montenegro. The theatre connections between the two countries were established only at the end of the 20th century and are still ongoing today; more precisely, they are connected to the process of emancipation in the Montenegrin society. We will examine the cooperation models that have been created in terms of their intercultural impact and the artistic and production standards that can be found in such connections in the Montenegrin theatre.

Janko Ljumović holds a master’s degree in dramatic arts and is an associate professor at the University of Montenegro Faculty of Drama, in Cetinje, where he heads the study programme in Production. The central field of his work encompasses contemporary theatre production and includes experience in producing numerous performances. He has participated in many national and international conferences and projects in the areas of performing arts, cultural and media management and cultural policy. He is the author and editor of the publications: Kultura Page [Culture Page], Produkcija značenja [Production of Meaning], Start-up Creative Podgorica, Platforma za novo djelovanje kulture [Platform for the New Culture Action] and Grad u parku [City in the Park]. Since 2008 he is the director of the Montenegrin National Theatre.
