The Latest Slovenian Performing Arts Aesthetics in Dialogue with the East

Anja Rošker

We can trace a number of stagings in the Slovenian theatre space after 1990 that were infused with the spirit of Eastern theatre conventions. Directors such as Tomi Janežič, Meta Hočevar, Jernej Lorenci, Janusz Kica and Dušan Jovanović have injected their performances with elements of Eastern theatre traditions whereby they invented stage languages that exceeded cultural definitions and resulted in innovative theatre aesthetics. The paper classifies the different types Eastern characteristics utilised on Slovenian stages and defines the levels and ways of intercultural dialogue using examples of stagings by Dušan Jovanović, Jernej Lorenci and Janusz Kica.
