Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is not just a story about a dysfunctional southern family, but also a complex study of loneliness, social strata and gender in the repressive patriarchal environment of the 1950s. It was a period that glorified "good old” family values but was also characterized by changes in male-female relationships. It is considered the period of pre-feminist/pre-gay rights and the time when ideas about alternative lifestyles began to emerge. Williams looks into the disintegrating American south, the dark history of slavery in America and the horrors of violence, injustice and racism, which during the 1950s still plagued the country. This masterfully written play about human greed, desperation, loneliness and unrealized passion is still seen as one of the best dramatic texts in America as well as worldwide.
