Language and Artistic Speech

Lectures and workshop

Organized by the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana and Maribor Theatre Festival

The Department of Language and Speech at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana (AGRFT) will present its work during the Maribor Theatre Festival through six lectures and exercises. They will be conducted by the pedagogues who teach Language and (artistic) Speech at AGRFT:
Doc. Katarina Podbevšek, Ph.D – Preparations for an interpretative reading of a dramatic text out loud (number of participants: 20); Assistant Prof. Nina Žavbi Milojević – Speech in light of mastering pronunciation and the appropriate usage of prosodic means (20); Doc. Alida Bevk, M.A. – The Technique of breathing during public speech (20); Prof. Vladimir Jurc – Analysis and preparation of a more demanding text in verses (10); Associate Prof. Tomaž Gubenšek – From voice to word (15); Prof. Kristijan Muck – Conversations in scarlet. The reality and service of poetry (the number of participants is not limited).

The presentation comprises three thematic clusters:

  1. Articulation phonetics (speech techniques) – elementary knowledge and skills in mastering speech: conscious breathing, relaxation, formatting and shaping the speech sound, conscious creation of sounds/ phonemes, connecting sounds into words;
  2. Pronunciation and elements of verbal phonetics – mastering the pronunciation rules, accentuation, exceptions from the norm, the dependence of the usage of intonation, pauses, strength, tempo, etc., on the type and content of the text;
  3. Preparation for speech interpretation of artistic text with particular emphasis on the text in verses – Content (literary) analysis, selection of suitable prosodic means, shaping the speech dynamics according to the content and form of the text.
